Exact same thing happened to me. Received a $100 gift card as a wedding gift, went online to activate it (successfully), and it showed $0 available balance, as the card had been used for a $98 purchase one day prior at a Target in California along with two $1 pending transactions.

To my surprise, the gift balance was $0 and the most recent transaction was the exact price of the card at a gas station in California in November.
