Exact same thing happened to me. Received a $100 gift card as a wedding gift, went online to activate it (successfully), and it showed $0 available balance, as the card had been used for a $98 purchase one day prior at a Target in California along with two $1 pending transactions.

So I got a $60 prepaid giftcard for my birthday. When I opened the packaging, I noticed there were two items of particular note in it; A piece of paper with the words, in all caps, "This is your pin. I recently received a "prepaidgiftbalance.com" visa gift card, unopened, from a relative. When I tried to activate it on their website, I received an error, and was directed to call the phone number. To my surprise, the gift balance was $0 and the most recent transaction was the exact price of the card at a gas station in California in November.
