The Dakota Jazz Club and Restaurant is a jazz club in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The club opened in 1985 at Bandana Square in St. Paul as a restaurant with local jazz in the bar. In 1988, the programming expanded to national artists with performances by McCoy Tyner and Ahmad Jamal. In 2003, the Dakota moved to downtown Minneapolis on Nicollet Mall .
The Vortex Club was founded by ex-taxi driver David Mossman. Mossman later started the Margate Jazz Festival before he died in 2018. In 2007, the club set up a record label, Vortex Records, to release the debut album by London-based trio Portico Quartet. Their album Knee-Deep in the North Sea was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize.
The Velvet Lounge was a nightclub in the South Loop of Chicago. [1] It started as a jazz club and was called the "dusty epicenter of the Midwest's free form jazz scene." [2] It was located at 2128 1/2 S. Indiana Avenue before moving to 67 E. Cermak when the original building was scheduled for demolition. It closed permanently in 2019.
