The Pacers finished their inaugural NBA season with a record of 36–46. Billy Knight and Don Buse represented Indiana in the NBA All-Star Game. However, this was one of the few bright spots of the Pacers' first 13 years in the NBA. During this time, they had only two non-losing seasons and only two playoff appearances.
The 1976–77 season marked the first season of NBA play for the Pacers and the team struggled early, compared to their ABA success. The Pacers only made it to the NBA playoffs three times in their first 13 seasons. [ 1 ] The Pacers would not win their first playoff series until the 1993–94 season, which came against the Orlando Magic.
Larry Bird coached the Pacers to the NBA Finals during the 1999–2000 season. Isiah Thomas coached the Pacers from 2000–01 to 2002–03. Rick Carlisle coached the Pacers from 2003–04 to 2006–07 and then returned to the team for a second stint starting with the 2021–22 season. Frank Vogel, Pacers coach from 2010 to 2016.
The Indiana Pacers were one of only two teams (along with the Kentucky Colonels) to play for the entire duration of the ABA without relocating, changing its team name or folding.
